Cody, WY Ė Alvin L. ďAlĒ Witkowski, 67, passed away Sunday, February 6, 2011 in Cody, WY after a courageous battle with stomach cancer.
Al was born March 16, 1943 in Edgeley, ND to Stanley and Erna (Freymark) Witkowski. Al went to school in Judd, ND. When he was 17, he moved to Billings, MT and worked at the Spudnutt shop. After a year there, Al went to work at Albertsonís in the bakery department. While in Billings, he met his future wife, Sandie Mason. They married February 29, 1964, in Cody.
In 1974, Al and Sandy moved to Cody, and purchased the Cody bakery. In 1980, they sold the bakery, and Al switched careers, and started working in the oil field with Husky Oil Company. He continued until they ceased operations, and was hired on with Marathon Oil, where he took early retirement. After retirement, Al never quit working. He enjoyed his time working for Bill Osbirn, The City of Cody, and Dale Weaver and Associates. He made many friends wherever he worked.
Al enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, lawn care, and spending time up at the cabin with Donna Lynn and family. He wouldnít have traded all of the hunting and work memories with Jim Frey, whom he considered a brother, for the world. Al enjoyed spending time with his daughter, Wendy, and her children who lived next door, giving him the opportunity to watch his grandchildren grow up and be such a big part of their lives. At Christmas time, he made it a point to make peanut brittle for all his friends and family. In his recent battle with cancer, Jeanne, Donna, and Wendy were what had kept him fighting for so long. Alís house had become Jeanneís second home so that she could be close to him. Every time Donna walked into the room, the smile that came to his face was priceless. And no matter how bad he felt that day, knowing Wendy was by his side always put him at ease, and made him fight that much harder. Al and his son, Scott, have great memories of boxing and the hunting trips they took. He was a life member of the Eagles, where he enjoyed spending time with friends and making new ones.
Al is survived by his daughter, Wendy McClure, and her children, Kati and Guy T. McClure of Cody; his son, Scott Witkowski of Cody, and his daughter, Brianna Witkowski of Worland; sisters, Jeanne Witkowski of Billings, Iris (Willie) Flaig and Gloria (Lee) Moser, all of Jamestown, ND; Guy V. McClure of Cody; numerous nieces and nephews; and longtime companion, Donna Lynn of Cody.
He was preceded in death by wife, Sandie Witkowski; sisters, Verna Johnson and Marilyn Burnett; and parents, Stanley and Erna Witkowski.
Alís big smile, stubborn attitude, and caring heart created memories that will live with us forever. Cremation has taken place at Alís wishes. His celebration of life will be held at the Cody Eagleís Lodge on February 19th, 2011 at 4:00 PM for a pot luck dinner in remembrance of Al. The family asks that instead of flowers, donations be made in his name to Spirit Mountain Hospice at 707 Sheridan Ave Cody, WY. A special thanks to Kyla, Chris, Jane, and Guy V. McClure for making his past few months more comfortable.
